The Audio Struggle is Real
Picture this: You’ve just finished recording an amazing video. The lighting is perfect, the shots are smooth, everything looks great… until you play it back and realize the audio is trash. Maybe it’s full of wind noise, maybe your mic cut out, or maybe you just forgot to turn it on altogether (we’ve all been there).
That’s why I started looking for a solid, easy-to-use wireless microphone—something I could trust to capture great audio without extra stress. I ended up buying the DJI Mic Mini, and thanks to a dear friend, Hei Ko Miller, I also got to test the DJI Mic 2.
So, which one is better? Which one should you get? Let’s break it down.
Why a Reliable Microphone Matters
Bad audio is the silent killer of video content. You can fix shaky footage, adjust lighting in post, and even crop out mistakes—but bad audio? That’s a dealbreaker.
And the worst part? You often don’t realize it’s bad until it’s too late. That’s why I wanted a microphone that:
✅ Records clear, crisp audio.
✅ Is easy to set up and use.
✅ Won’t randomly stop working mid-shoot.
Both the DJI Mic Mini and DJI Mic 2 check a lot of these boxes, but they serve different needs.
DJI Mic Mini – Small, Simple, and Budget-Friendly
I picked up the DJI Mic Mini for my trip to Thailand. I wanted something lightweight, reliable, and affordable that could handle interviews and vlogs.
And honestly? It delivered.
Size and Portability
The DJI Mic Mini is tiny—about half the size of the DJI Mic 2. It clips easily onto your shirt and barely stands out in a shot, which is great if you don’t want a big microphone distracting from your video.
Real-World Use: Where I Tested It
I first used it during an interview in Thailand, and the sound quality was really solid. Then, I took it to Nui Beach in Phuket, where my dear friend, DUBOVOY, was filming on the DJI Pocket 3. Connecting the mic was super easy, and it worked flawlessly.
This is one of the biggest wins of the DJI Mic Mini—it just works. No complicated settings, no fiddling with audio levels. Plug it in, adjust your camera’s input levels, and start recording.
Why I Like It
✔️ Super compact – Easy to carry, barely noticeable in videos.
✔️ Great audio for the price – Definitely better than built-in camera mics.
✔️ Charging case – Holds three full charges, so you never run out of battery.
✔️ Affordable – The basic vlogging set costs around 1.8 million VND (~$70), while the full kit (two mics, a receiver, and the case) costs about 3.7 million VND (~€150).
The Downsides
Of course, no mic is perfect. Here’s what I didn’t love about the DJI Mic Mini:
❌ No internal recording – If your camera messes up, there’s no backup audio.
❌ Limited phone compatibility – It doesn’t work with default iPhone or Android camera apps, with the Bluetooth function, unless plugging in the receiver it comes with or something like the Blackmagic Camera App.
If you’re thinking of using it for vlogging on your phone, keep this in mind. It works great with DJI cameras like the Pocket 3, but for smartphones, it’s a bit of a hassle to attach the receiver to the phone every time.

Is the DJI Mic Mini Enough?
So far, I’ve been happy with the DJI Mic Mini, but what about the DJI Mic 2?
Well, that one has some upgrades, including internal recording, good for if you need extra security for your audio.
The DJI Mic 2 – A Step Up in Features and Price
So, we’ve covered the DJI Mic Mini—a compact, budget-friendly wireless mic that works great for creators who need something simple and reliable.
But what if you need more features, more security, and better phone compatibility? That’s where the DJI Mic 2 comes in.
At first glance, the DJI Mic 2 looks a lot like the Mini, but the biggest difference is hidden inside.
The Key Upgrade: Internal Recording
This is the biggest reason to consider the DJI Mic 2—it has internal recording.
What does that mean? Well, if your camera stops recording, your audio is still safe because the mic itself saves a backup.
I tested this while filming an FPV drone interview, and honestly? It’s a lifesaver. Knowing I had a backup recording took away the stress of wondering ‘Is this actually recording?’
With the DJI Mic Mini, if something goes wrong, you’re out of luck. But with the Mic 2, you can just press record on the mic itself, and you’re good.
If you’re someone who does interviews, podcasts, or professional shoots, this feature alone makes it worth considering.
Other Upgrades in the DJI Mic 2
Besides internal recording, the Mic 2 has a few more improvements:
✔️ Better phone compatibility – It works more reliably with iPhones and Androids, no need for extra apps. Always the option to synchronize later.
However…
❌ It’s bigger – Still compact, but not as tiny as the DJI Mic Mini.
❌ It’s more expensive – You’re paying extra for the internal recording and better connectivity.
So, is it worth it?
Which One Should You Choose?
It depends on how you plan to use it.
Go for the DJI Mic Mini if:
✅ You want something small, simple, and budget-friendly.
✅ You’re mainly using it with a camera like the DJI Pocket 3 or DJI’s Action cams.
✅ You don’t need internal recording—you just want good sound without extra frills.
Go for the DJI Mic 2 if:
✅ You do interviews or professional shoots and need backup audio.
✅ You want better phone compatibility without extra apps. Just hit record and clap your hands. And synchronize later.
Personally, I bought the DJI Mic Mini because it fit my needs—I wanted something light, reliable, and easy to use. But if I was doing more high-stakes interviews, I’d seriously consider upgrading to the Mic 2.
Using the Mic for Travel and Outdoor Shoots
