Introduction to the Hai Van Pass
The Hai Van Pass is one of the most unforgettable routes in Vietnam. Stretching along the central coast, it connects Da Nang to Hue, winding through misty mountains with stunning views of the ocean. Known as the “Ocean Cloud Pass,” this road truly lives up to its name, offering dramatic scenery that makes it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty of Vietnam.
I took on this adventure with a good friend, Yaroslav Dubovoy, who joined me in capturing the experience. Riding together allowed us to share the thrill of the pass. You can check out Yaroslav’s work and follow his journey on Instagram here.

Is the Hai Van Pass Dangerous?
One of the most common questions about the Hai Van Pass is whether it’s safe, especially if you’re not used to mountain roads. The answer? It’s as safe as you make it. Here are a few things to keep in mind for a smooth and enjoyable ride:
- Take it slow on the curves: The Hai Van Pass is famous for its hairpin turns and twists, so it’s best to keep your speed down, especially around blind corners.
- Stay on your side of the road: Motorbikes, cars, and even trucks share this road, so always stay in your lane.
My experience? Riding here felt safe as long as I paid attention and kept a steady pace. The thrill of the pass, the crisp mountain air, and the breathtaking views made every twist and turn worth it!

How to Reach the Hai Van Pass from Hoi An
Starting your journey from Hoi An? Here’s an easy route to help you get to the Hai Van Pass:
- Head toward Da Nang: The first leg of the journey is a 45-minute ride to Da Nang. Follow the main road north until you reach the city.
- Take National Route 1A: Once in Da Nang, follow the signs for National Route 1A going north. This route will take you straight to the beginning of the Hai Van Pass.
- Enjoy the ride: As you leave the busy streets of Da Nang, the scenery shifts to lush green mountains, and you’ll know you’re on the right path. The entire route from Hoi An to the start of the pass takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace.
We rented our motorbike in Da Nang, which made things convenient and gave us flexibility on the road. Renting locally also means you’re getting a bike suited for the terrain, making the journey that much smoother.
